Free parking in Nairn

News that three of our councillors voted for the Highland council budget and therefore must be seen as supporting parking fees in Nairn have been greeted with dismay by the great majority of Nairnites.

Here at the Spin we recognise the importance that free parking has brought to the town for locals and visitors alike.

To aid people to avoid the proposed parking charges we aim to highlight various areas of the town where drivers can park for free. We hope to transfer this to a website at some future date and maybe try and publish the information to a few notice boards around the town at friendly venues.

The first area to feature is that of the fishertown. There are a few parking restrictions, namely some yellow lines to stop people parking on both sides of a the street at busy times, but venture down one of the many small side streets and you'll find plenty of unrestricted free parking where you can stay as long as you like.

Location is everything and with careful planning you'll be just be a couple of minutes walk to the High Street from the fishertown or a few yards to the beach or harbour.

Potentially parking in the fishertown will save you paying any parking charges whilst being near several of Nairn's favourite attractions (High St, beach and the harbour).

  1. Is there no a Nairn councillor that stays down Caledonian Street? Just sayin...

  2. The residents in Fishertown will not be impressed that they cannot park within walking distance of their homes due to people too tightfisted to put their hands in their pockets to pay a charge for parking at the Links/High Street! It is congested enough on a daily basis without the extra cars coming in to get free parking. I am sure these people would feel the same if the situation were reversed .

The article just underlines the absurdity of bringing in parking charges to some parts of Nairn. How anyone in power could have voted for this proposal is beyond me.

It’s not about being ‘tight fisted’ it’s just logic, why pay to park when a few yards away you can do it for free?

I hope information is published for tourists re free parking so they will continue to visit our town.

  4. Yet people last year were up in arms about MotorHomes and wanted to charge parking (when they were presumably spending money in Nairn). Hypocrites.

  5. About time Fishertown saw some motor vehicular activity..... 1 of the main reasons I emigrated (apart from the tight gene pool) was due to the many many many empty parking spaces that littered the likes of Union, Park and Society streets. I had to buy a flat opposite the Rose St multi story in the "Sneck" to get my fill of "autophillia". If the residents of Nairn wishing to grace the shops of the High St aren't willing to spend the projected £4.50 hr or £30 a day parking charges, Im sure they will flock and fill the wide open spaces in King St etc, I may just move back.

  7. What will all us fishertown residents do, especially in summer, when everyones parked outside our houses and left us with nowhere to park, and blocked our very narrow roads so we are stuck?

  8. I'm so glad a Nairn councillor lives in the fishertown and will be able to report on the effect of the parking charges that he voted for will have on his local community. The idea of free parking is tongue in cheek but underlines the problems parking charges will have upon the whole town. If only we had councillors who'd fight our corner Nairn would be a better place. Shame on them.

  9. "Empty Fishertown streets?"...which ones??? The ones around me have been getting more full (over the past 23yrs) as most houses do not have off street parking. Most houses now have 2 cars for the occupants, with some even having 4 cars for the occupants!, & all on street parking. There are even people who live in other streets parking in my street because theirs is full up, making it difficult for us existing residents to get in & out!! Then matters get even worse when there is something happening at either the Little Theatre or the old Fishertown Museum...loads of parked cars everywhere! I suggest some people look at what is actually going on day in day out, & now advertising the area as "free parking" will really cause problems, for us residents!! How will the emergency services get in & out??
