The new 4 unit affordable housing development |
Affordable housing is often used as a carrot on a stick by developers. Planners and councillors love this carrot and always fall for it. 'High density housing in a crap site, ooh you have an affordable housing unit included, of course we'll support you building it'.
Mysteriously affordable housing units often fall off the plans by the time the development is built. The developer pleads that it's just not profitable to build such properties.
Even when cheaper units are built it's often difficult to make sure the right people buy them. There's a tendency for them to be snapped up not by young couples but by landlords wishing to rent them out.
So it's with great delight that we feature a new affordable housing development in Nairn. The units are on the compact side but at only £25K each but we're sure they'll be popular. No room for bathrooms, you have to walk to the toilet block in Harbour Street. We're just waiting for a certain councillor to tell us how much Nairn needs these properties and how long they've been campaigning for such housing, I right
