Most towns switch on the lights at Christmas but Nairn decided to switch some off.
Namely the Albert Street/A 96 traffic lights. As far as we know there weren't any fireworks or dancing councillors to mark the occasion, just naked darkness.
Traffic still seems to be snarling to a holt as it staggers through Nairn but that's maybe because the rest of the traffic lights need to be switched off as well?
We confess we're not rocket scientists so that's probably a very bad idea, scratch that.
What has become clear to the clipboard safety hoards is that traffic accidents with pedestrians has dropped to zero around the Albert Street/A96 junction. Although a full public enquiry has yet to be commissioned initial findings suggest that the erected safety barriers are contributing to... safety
Highland Council proposes that these barriers are now extended along the whole of the A96 throughout Nairn making it impossible to cross the A96 unless you're in a vehicle.
If the scheme proves successful then the barriers will be placed on the pavements of all streets in Nairn hopefully eliminating pedestrian traffic.
Those without their own vehicles will be able to call for a council approved taxi to take them across the busy road.
