Congestion charges

Our cash strapped council is looking at bringing in a congestion charge for all traffic that enters Nairn.

Pollution levels are very high in Nairn especially during the evening rush hour, and the A96 is a route that many pupils from the Academy walk to get home.

No pricing has been set as yet but it's thought that it could be as much as £10 a day.

Initially the scheme will run as a trial whilst traffic levels are accessed once it's in place and new pollution readings taken.

If successful in significantly cutting down the number of vehicles entering the town it could put a question mark over the beleaguered Nairn bypass that appears to be decades away due to the need for a public enquiry.

It's hoped that the number of cars and lorries on Nairn's road will drop significantly enabling the switch off of all but pedestrian traffic light controls.
