Nairn aquarium kicks the bucket

For those of you that have forgotten (how could you) the Nairn Harbour group had great plans to develop the harbour and harbour area.

There was to be an aquarium, increased water sports, a booking office for boat trips, shops and toilets plus many other features.

An ambitious plan you might think, unfortunately you'd be right. The plan fell at the first fence as one of the proposals was to dredge the harbour. This happened but then the harbour wall and road collapsed and a large amount of money has now to be found to fix the structures.

There's also the important issue of flood measures. Neighbouring Moray has successful secured and implemented millions of pounds on flood relief. Meanwhile Nairn waits for any money to be spent and much of the fishertown is under threat should the wrong weather conditions come together.

But all is not lost when it comes to the Harbour Group ideas. We might not be getting an aquarium but from Easter glass bottom buckets will be available to hire from the Harbour Master.

For only £5 an hour visitors will be able to gaze under water from the harbour pontoons or paddle into the sea with these magic devices that'll allow you to see all manner of creatures in their natural habitat.

Who needs an aquarium?
