Serve yourself

Self check outs are great, aren't they? Well no and here's why.

The Spin avoids them at both petrol stations and supermarkets. They act to keep people out of jobs and do they really save you much if any time?

Imagine that a supermarket opened up two or more staffed checkouts instead of employing one member of staff to try and sort out the mess of self check out.

How many times have you had to wait whilst the member of staff came over to sort out your problem. Machine doesn't like your bag, you need authorisation for an alcohol purchase, it doesn't like your cash and so the issues go on.

The annoying voice can be turned off if you press the speaker button on screen till a red cross goes through it (bonus) but everything else about self service sucks.

Staff sometimes view you with great suspicion as one study found that one in four transactions result in some sort of theft.

Give us a human any day rather than a machine. The Spin likes the Co-opies queue buster scheme whereby staff leave the shop floor and open a till when the queues get too much.

What do you think?
