Have parking meters been bought?

A report in the P and J suggests that new parking meters have already been bought by Highland Council presumably in readiness for roll out to the likes of Nairn?

The article suggests that any 'consultation' by Highland Council is pretty much meaningless as parking charges will go ahead anyway.

Nairn's Parking Charges Three councillors were adamant at a public meeting that whilst they would be voting for Highland Council's budget proposal it would allow them to consult with the council and overthrow this option, it would appear that this is not to be the case.

Many members of the public remained sceptical over their stance; why not show their support for the community that voted them into post and vote against the Highland Council budget proposal? Just one of our four councillors managed to do that.

Our two independent councillors have shown their colours, and will no doubt try and bluster their way through when parking fees are introduced in Nairn.

Perhaps if they are true to their word they should offer up their salaries as a parking fine fund and raise the much needed £34K that Highland Council hope to raise. We're not holding our breath.

Nairn deserves better folks, councillors that supported their community rather than their jobs would be a good start.

  1. So we have three Nairn councillors who voted at a public meeting to oppose parking charges, who then supported Highland Councils budget supporting parking fees in Nairn. They then told us there would be consultation and we wouldn't get parking charges in Nairn but I suspect we're in the same boat as Dingwall and the meters have been purchased for every area of the Highlands.
It's more than a shame that three of councillors would seem more interested in supporting Highland council than their community.
A vote against the budget might not have made a jot of difference to the end result but at least it would have signalled support for those that voted for them.
First it was parking charges, what next? I suspect when it comes to cuts our three councillors will vote for whatever Highland council wants them to do, and worse we have over three years of these people being in power.
