In a ground breaking move Nairn museum is to offer all of it’s pilfered artefacts back to their countries of origin free of charge.
Many UK museums are filled with objects that are questionable in terms how they got to the UK; some were just seen as the spoils of war or the commonwealth.
One of the most contentious is the Elgin marbles, and here in Scotland we have the Stone of Destiny on loan to us.
It’s possible that this gesture by Nairn museum might see the number of objects it has for display greatly reduced but as the museum faces an uncertain future this could be for the best.
Should you wish to view the collection before they disappear you can visit the museum for the princely sum of £4. Visitors are mainly tourists on wet days although in fairness the fishertown museum is worth a visit, just a shame it was moved from the more suitable and fitting Laing hall.
