Politician

We’re sat here at the Spin office twiddling our thumbs awaiting for news to flow in over the wire and as such have had a discussion about Nairn councillors.

Our topic was, when was the last time a councillor really stood up for Nairn against Highland council? We all had blank faces.

Back in the day Cllr MacDonald seemed pretty proactive in our community but that all seems to have changed since she’s come out as a landowner hoping for planning permission to build lots and lots of houses on her Lochloy land.

We reasoned that we’re all too young and therefore can’t remember the heroes who stood up and fought the Nairn corner.

We’ve become used to politicians standing up and telling blatant lies, usually without consequence. But is that it? We just nod and await the next set of meaningless words?

In recent years much blame has been placed upon the older generation. The Scottish independence vote, Brexit to name but two. Will the younger generation become a force to be reckoned with politically?

In Westminster we currently have a Prime Minister who seems to need the permission of her cabinet before she can do anything. We also have Corbyn in opposition who should have reduced the government to confetti with probing questions but thus far has failed to win a general election and leads (like the Tories) a fragmented party.

Meanwhile in Scotland we continue to vote in elections but rarely obtain the outcome that the majority of us want (Brexit).

We can draw little comfort that in Nairn we’re about to get parking charges that no one wants apart from the majority of our councillors.

Politicians eh, still £16k+ isn’t a bad salary for part time work as a councillor and apparently just requires you to agree with everything Highland council asks of you. Oh, and the added attraction of a free lunch when you attend the chamber. No wonder some are putting on the beef!
